The Right Path Forward

I support in principle the proposed pathway as described in the June 1 edition [“Potential Nut Plains Path in the Works”]. I support it as strongly as I opposed the proposed Shoreline Greenway Trail segment last year. This proposal is right for many of the reasons the Shoreline Greenway Trail proposal was wrong.

It will serve more people, connecting them to more places of value: specifically, two schools, a park and a neighborhood store. More people are likely to use it more often because it is convenient to their daily lives. As a former resident of Nut Plains Road, I can attest that it provides a much-needed, safer transportation and recreational opportunity in an area with poor sight lines and few areas of safe transit for walkers.

It is a system complete in itself. It does not define itself within a broad concept of questionable value and minimal probability of ever being realized, and it can be the beginning of an expanding network over time, if justified by public interest. It works by itself and it works as a base for possible expansion.

Ultimately, it must meet the same test that the Shoreline Greenway Trail failed: a complete and well documented plan, and a credible budget. My final support, and hopefully that of the community, will be based on those deliverables.

In the meantime, I encourage Town Engineer James Portley to carry on and wish him good luck.
