Inspirational and Patriotic

On May 26, fellow military veterans and I were invited by the John B. Sliney School in Branford to attend Memorial Day ceremonies. Under the direction of music teacher Mr. Ted Samodel, the program began with the “Star Spangled Banner” followed by the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance and a melody of patriotic songs. Indeed it was as inspirational as it was patriotic.

As a veteran, I was particularly impressed at Mr. Samodel’s storytelling technique of weaving together historical events that illustrated the observation of Memorial Day as we know it today. The young students who will become our future leaders― sat quietly, attentive and in awe of his presentation.

I wish to thank Principal Margaret Mary Gethings, her teaching staff, the John B. Sliney School Singers, and the students for their outstanding performances and their efforts to keep this day very memorable.
