No Matter What

As a member of the Madison Historic District Commission, I am writing in response to David Rackey’s April 6 letter [“A Full Range of Options”] regarding the Academy School property. While he certainly has the right to his opinion about the future of Academy School, there was an error in a statement regarding the property. No matter what the residents of Madison ultimately vote to do with the building, and regardless of whether it is owned publicly or privately, it will always remain a part of the Historic District. No exterior changes, demolition, additions, or new construction would be allowed without the approval of the commission.

The letter went on to state that we would “increase the risk of an eyesore since the town can’t control its future.” I respectfully point out to the writer that both the Historic District Commission and Planning & Zoning Commission are in place to ensure that this doesn’t happen.
