Deep Commitment to the Arts

We have just finished an amazing run of the musical Sweeney Todd at Guilford High School. Those who saw the production have marveled at what the students and directors have accomplished. The professionalism on display made it easy to feel as if you were watching a Broadway show. This is no accident; Guilford has a deep commitment to the performing arts supported by our school budget. With the community’s support, we can continue that commitment.

Guilford High School Theatre Arts (GHSTA) produces a fall play, a spring musical, and a children’s play in May. This effort involves hundreds of students and many extra hours of work by our teachers, custodians, and volunteers. As co-chairs of Theatre Arts Parent Support (TAPS), we know what it takes to stage a production of this caliber. TAPS oversees publicity, fundraising for equipment purchases and educational workshops, student meals during long rehearsal days, ticket sales, and producing the playbill, to name a few. We have more than 150 students participating in cast, crew, and pit orchestra. Every time they participate, they learn about responsibility, leadership, commitment, efficiency, teamwork, and business, all skills they will need in the future.

We greatly appreciate our community’s support. If your readers have not been to a show or concert in our beautiful Performing Arts Center, we hope they do so. As a school district and town, we cannot afford to lose any of these theater resources or wonderful teachers. If we do, our students will miss an opportunity that cannot be replaced. By supporting the budget, we get an excellent value in the schools for our tax dollar.

We encourage your readers to vote for the town and school budget on April 18 and to encourage their friends and family to vote. We look forward to future productions!
