His Dedication was the Foundation

Joseph Miezejeski, a soft-spoken man who skillfully guided Deep River through the 1980s, died on March 13. Joe was an old-school leader who took a ground-level view of the town and “got things done.”

Joe was instrumental in the development of Plattwood Park and the Town Landing, as well as the Deep River Water Pollution Control Facility. Joe, with the assistance of Richard “Dick” Sherman, passed the idea of a town-wide sanitary sewerage system in the mid 1980s, securing a 90 percent grant/10 percent low-interest loan for the $13 million project.

Another notable endeavor, completed well before the era of “streetscapes,” was Joe’s plan to rehabilitate the downtown area. I watched as Joe personally planted the trees that still line Main Street. In addition to his public service, Joe ran his own successful nursery, which to this date is still in operation.

Joe was a great leader, as well as a brave solider, having served in the Army during World War ll. Joe possessed a greater love for our town, his dedication was the foundation for the renaissance of Deep River. Joe will be missed.
