Much can be Accomplished

In 1891, Dr. James Naismith invented basketball so that his students could expend energy in a healthy, productive manner. After being a part of the Madison Youth Basketball Association’s Coaches v Coaches game on Feb. 24, I believe his legacy is alive and well.

Twenty-five courageous coaches risked ridicule and injury for the entertainment of their players. In turn, those players donated 1,416 nonperishables, and their parents a cash donation of $450, all for the benefit of the Madison Food Pantry. The sight of so many kids, bags in hand, was inspiring and the message was loud and clear: Much can be accomplished when people come together for a common cause. My first thank you goes out to First Selectman Tom Banisch, who gave a great half-time address that really reinforced this idea.

I would also like to thank Jay Canth who made the evening extra special by working with several local businesses (Egidio Assante Wealth Management, Coastal Pro Transport/Continental Auto Sales, Vigliotti Construction/JFA Management, Donahue’s, BatterUp, Lenny and Joe’s, Bradley and Wall, Ashley’s, Cristy’s, Zuse Inc, and Brother Mike’s) to offer prizes for our biggest donors. Although helping others should be reward enough, it never hurts to tap into those competitive juices. I suspect next year’s turnout will be even better.

Finally, I would like to thank the coaches who gave their time that night. It was a good reminder of what great role models we have volunteering on behalf of our children. With an emphasis on good sportsmanship and fun, the coaches lead by example, just as they always do. This was community service at its best and I think they all deserve a public pat on the back!
