What a Bunch

I write to thank so many Scranton Library Friends who helped provide information to residents about the Library Referendum on Feb. 7. Thank goodness, it was a whopping success.

I am so indebted to all our members who bundled up, long johns and all, to give out information at our local grocery stores. I think some people were a little taken back by being approached by mature (some of us outright geriatric) women with a cause. However, good will seemed to prevail. I have been left in awe of the friends’ willingness to literally put their bodies on the line to secure support for the library. They hauled easels, chairs, tables, posters, hand-outs, and gracious smiles to our grocery stores for four very cold days. What a bunch!

They include many of the people who so often give of themselves. In frigid temperatures and tearing winds at Stop & Shop, Ingrid Oris, Betsey Piner, Barbara Gibson, Tina Garrity, Beth Cerny, Ellen Miller, Joan Filbey, Ann Pfisterer, Jen Thompson, Denice McGregor, Carmela Scialabba, and Connie Piccione all put in hours. At Robert’s, Joyce Rourke, Susannah Graedel, again Jen Thompson, Colleen Cummings, and Laura Osterman filled out the volunteer roster. Some did double duty.

At Robert’s, Bob and Zach Fusco kindly let us greet patrons just inside the entrance. At Stop & Shop, Mike Smith gave us the helpful space right at the main entry. Without their help and cooperation, we never would have been able to reach out to so many wonderful people, those who most deserve appreciation: the voters of Madison who supported our library, the gem of our community that serves so many in a multitude of ways.
