Beyond Belief

The CVS in Clinton needs to move, but not to the proposed location at routes 1 and 81. How the town got itself in this bind is beyond belief. The first selectman needs to get involved. Where is he? I call on him to schedule an informal meeting with voters to hear from us and so that we can understand his position on CVS, which is unknown at this time. We need leadership.

The reasons the proposed location is bad are well known, having been expressed clearly at public hearings and covered by the Harbor News—my thanks for them. The likely reason this keeps moving forward is inside political pressure to help friends. While it will likely be too late, I encourage your readers to remember this at the next election and vote accordingly. Clinton has its own swamp.

Knowledgeable people, including the Planning & Zoning Commission (PZC)’s own attorney, indicate that the only valid reasons to deny this application have to be based on safety, traffic, environment, flooding of the Hull Street evacuation route, conformance to Department of Transportation regulations, and similar grounds. These grounds exist.

The PZC should follow the example of former chairman Anselmo Delia, who made the thoughtful and detailed motion that resulted in the defeat of the Global Propane application. That denial stood up in court.
