A Good Part of My Life

I love the Scranton Library. A good part of my life, starting in the 6th grade, I browsed (the computer was science fiction then) in the former upstairs stacks looking for books on Babe Ruth, stories of the sea, and even some poetry I did not understand.

Through high school and college, I lived right across the street, so while my father was probably at some bar, I was among the books, thinking maybe I could write a couple myself someday. When I married Nancy and we lived in Clinton, Scranton was still there and now I was teaching in Durham; on visits to Scranton I would tip my Providence baseball cap to Shakespeare’s bust outside the entrance.

We moved back to Beechwood Drive in North Madison in ‘64, but the ride downtown never seemed long because my three girls Lisa, Shauna, and Erin experienced the new layout (the upstairs stacks were no more).

Now, my granddaughter Mia and I visit on Saturday and days off from school. If I were to guess, I think Mia loves the library just as much as I do. The other day while browsing for dolphins, Mia said, “This place should be bigger.” I told her maybe it would be. A library can’t be too big.
