Careful Consideration

I had the chance to attend the public hearing regarding the Shoreline Greenway Trail section on Nov. 1, 2016. While it was dominated by some very vocal and adamant opponents, I was interested to hear Town Engineer Jim Portley’s presentation of planning (and a map) going back more than a decade. Recently, there have been several letters urging the selectmen to quickly reject this project. I write to give my support to the careful consideration that appears to be underway.

As a biker and former resident of Horseshoe Road, I am familiar with traveling this part of Route 1 while not being in a car. The section is narrow, on a steep hill, and is a bottleneck in navigating the shoreline from the relatively more passable roads in Madison to the less-trafficked Route 146. Any further bike trail will need to involve this section, and I personally believe it is valuable as a stand-alone project. It is also important to recognize that this is a state road, and that Guilford is part of a larger community on the shoreline.

Last week the Board of Selectmen held a workshop on the issue. I applaud them for taking the time to evaluate the issue fully and not rushing to decide. I understand that there are citizens who oppose the section for valid reasons, but I trust that the selectmen will make the best decision in the interest of all of Guilford, and in the context of Guilford’s role as part of the Connecticut shoreline as a whole.
