Not a Free Ride

At long last, Madison’s plan for a senior tax freeze has been approved by the Board of Selectmen and the Board of Finance! We can now offer a little extra support to the population that has put in so much time and effort into building our town and that continues to serve our community through very many volunteer programs and committees. This is a major step in keeping the population of Madison vibrant and diversified.

Senior tax freeze programs have already been proven successful in both Guilford and Durham. Madison can do the same. Madison seniors who qualify, by age, income level, and property value, will be able to apply to have their property taxes “frozen” at their current level; that is, their property taxes would remain constant and not subjected to increases each year. To be clear, this is not a senior tax “freebie,” but a freeze. Qualifying seniors will not be getting a free ride, but will continue to pay their property taxes.

We should all support a program that gives our qualifying senior residents a break, lets them stay in their homes, and that keeps our community diverse and strong.
