A More Positive Tone

I’m a runner and a cyclist, and a proud card-carrying member of the Shoreline Greenway Trail (SGT). I also appreciate Guilford’s historic town center (no, these aren’t mutually exclusive), and I respect the rights and opinions of all Guilford citizens.

On Nov. 1, 2016, I attended a public hearing on the SGT’s proposal to build a 0.7-mile trail section along Route 1. I expected to participate in a productive and respectful discourse. Unfortunately, that’s not what I witnessed. Instead, I listened with surprise as several Guilford citizens angrily launched deeply personal attacks on members of the SGT and their efforts.

I write this mostly to remind all citizens of Guilford that SGT is an all-volunteer organization “dedicated to building a 25-mile continuous path of bicyclists, walkers, and hikers on the Connecticut shoreline.” Through many years of actions (guided hikes, bike rides, fundraisers, and outdoor education sessions), the SGT has proven its stated intent to “improve the well-being of people of all ages who love the outdoors.” The SGT’s dedicated leaders and volunteers deserve our thanks and respect.

Were there an obvious “landing spot” for the trail, most would agree that the SGT project is a worthy goal. A multi-use path allowing Guilford residents to access Hammonasset Beach, Lighthouse Point, and the shoreline’s many other attractions would clearly elevate Guilford’s quality of life. A completed SGT would provide a green commuting option, encourage healthy active lifestyles, and decongest the roadways. The unfortunate reality that much of Guilford’s trail section will need to be built alongside busy roads shouldn’t detract from the greater good of the SGT project.

As Guilford nears the SGT workshop scheduled for Jan. 5, I implore all sides to approach this meeting with a more positive and respectful tone. The shoreline needs the SGT. I support the SGT.
