This Crazy Election Season

I’m sure we all feel fortunate to live in our lovely town and that our neighbors are all nice people, and I’m sure this is still mostly true. During this crazy election season, however, I think I’ve learned something about some of my Guilford neighbors.

Having chosen our preferred candidate for president, my wife placed bumper stickers on her car, supporting Donald Trump. Mysteriously damage started to appear, a nasty scratch that looks like “keying,” and a serious dent, which will cost $800 to fix. On other occasions chewing gum stuck on the door handle and scribble on the stickers. I have no proof of a connection, but the timing is certainly suspicious. Defiantly she refused to remove the offending items.

As another way to show our support, we made Trump shirts and outer fleeces. These we both wore many times around town and, while we received many compliments from those in agreement, we were never challenged nor were aware of any negativity.

Differently, when we chose to stand on the street with Donald Trump signs, as well as receiving many supportive gestures, we were thoroughly abused by our detractors, from the safety of their cars.

So what I think I have learned is that some people will only take action when they can do so anonymously or when they cannot be counter-challenged.
