Not About Politics

Thanks go to the Chester couple who started the grass roots alliance against the defacement of the East Haddam sign championing love and support for all women, Muslims, immigrants, disabled, LGBTQ, and people of color. On Nov. 13, The Valley Stands Up coalition of 350 people marched from Chester center to Deep River Town Hall, holding signs promoting respect, love, and acceptance of all people. This coalition supports all those who face discrimination or are bullied. The group includes women, men, young and old, and people from all races, political, religious, and sexual affiliations, united together against racism, gender and religious bias, homophobia, hate, and divisive rhetoric.

Open, civil, and constructive dialogue is necessary for there to be any hope of healing and rising up from the depths of despair as our country continues as a divided nation. Every elected official, leader, and citizen needs to engage in respectful actions that will reassure all our communities that American principles of freedom and equality will be protected, enabling all of us to feel accepted and safe, and ensuring everyone has opportunities to thrive unabated. The Chester Democrats applaud, support, and join with this grassroots, non-partisan coalition.
