Looking Out for Us

My husband and I moved to Old Saybrook from Bridgeport several years ago. We knew we could not afford to continue to live in Connecticut on our retirements if we stayed in Bridgeport. Old Saybrook’s property taxes are much lower and our quality of life is much higher here. However, we are concerned about the prospect of additional state taxes, specifically on small towns, in order to offset some of the debt occurring in cities like Hartford and Bridgeport.

State Senator Paul Formica (R-20) and State Representative Devin Carney (R-23) have taken strong stands against any type of regionalization that will cost Old Saybrook taxpayers additional funds.

They both were successful in stopping the prospect of a statewide car tax, which would have drastically risen our vehicle tax rate here in Old Saybrook and would send more of our tax dollars to other communities. Both have also pledged to fight the Department of Public Health’s proposal to create regionalized countywide health districts, which could cost Old Saybrook residents more money.

In addition, both opposed the second highest tax in Connecticut state history and successfully defeated proposed tax increases to veterinary services, architectural services, web-based services, and engineering services. They also were successful in eliminating the burdensome gross receipts tax placed specifically on homeowners who use propane to heat their homes, which was unfair.

Paul and Devin are looking out for us and our bottom line. We need their voices in Hartford standing up for Old Saybrook’s taxpayers and pushing against the special interests of Hartford. I hope your readers will me in voting for them on Nov. 8.
