The List of Lasts

I’m writing in support of Devin Carney (R-23)’s re-election to continue serving as our state representative. As a senior, it is important to me that we have representatives working to support our population.

Devin has focused much of his first term on supporting issues important to seniors, with the goal of keeping more seniors in Connecticut and making our state more affordable. One of his very first proposals was to eliminate or at least reduce the estate tax and the gift tax in our state. Currently, Connecticut is the only state with a gift tax and one of only 18 states with an estate tax. To add insult to injury, Connecticut is one of the only states where their estate tax kicks in far lower than the federal exemption does. These are the types of taxes that push seniors out to states without them, like Florida. Devin has pledged to keep working to see these taxes eliminated or reduced once and for all.

He fought Governor Dannel Malloy’s deep cuts to probate court services, which made some pundits refer to Connecticut as the most expensive place to die. He worked across the aisle and met with our Democratic Judge of Probate Terrence Lomme and first selectmen of all parties and advocated for a bill they and he supported that restored much of those cuts and restored the fee cap. In terms of energy costs, Devin advocated for a bill that banned variable rate contracts, which often lock seniors into long-term, costly deals. Now electric companies cannot take advantage of the elderly.

We have to stop being on the list of lasts for seniors in terms of cost of living. I know Devin has the best interests of seniors in mind at the Capitol and he will always fight for us.
