It Can Happen

I write this letter in support of State Senator Art Linares, Jr. (R-1133) and State Representative Devin Carney (R-23) to continue to be our elected officials representing the Town of Old Saybrook. These representatives have taken our town’s interests to Hartford as they continue to fight for more efficient government and our small town values.

There has been serious financial stress at the state capitol under the current administration and we need to re-elect Art and Devin for the state’s own economic sanity. As we enter the new legislative session this fall, it is entirely possible that the next State House of Representatives speaker will be Joe Aresimowicz (D-30), whose day job is as an employee of AFSCME, one of the largest unions in our state. I have previously written in this paper about what I consider to be excessive union strength in our state and how it impacts our collective ability to manage our finances at the State and local level. Having a union employee as Speaker of the House would be irresponsible to Connecticut taxpayers as we attempt to dig out of our financial mess in Connecticut.

I encourage your readers to consider voting for Art and Devin in this election so that we can have balance in our state government. We have balance at the local level here in Old Saybrook and we are successful in working together. It can happen at the state level also.

First Selectman Carl P. Fortuna, Jr.
