The Price We All Have to Pay

Judy Benson has written an excellent article in the Aug. 25 Valley Courier, “Needleman Seeks Investigation of Linares Fundraising.”

However, when Needleman is quoted as saying, “By using his position of public trust for personal benefit, Sen. Linares is in violation of ethic rules and Connecticut state law,” Needleman is way off base.

In this instance, what controls is free speech in political campaigns and not some goody-two-schools state law.

This means that either candidate can say horrible and untruthful things about each other, and that this the price we all have to pay for having free speech in our democracy.
