A Perfect Tribute

I have often said that there’s no better place to be than Madison for the Fourth of July, but I think 2016 topped all previous years.

On Saturday, the all-volunteer Madison Cultural Arts produced another spectacular Concert on the Green, featuring the Wallingford Symphony Orchestra, Shoreline Youth Symphony, and MOTO. More than 6,000 people attended this annual event, which culminated in a rollicking rendition of “The 1812 Overture” and “The Stars and Stripes Forever.”

Perfect weather continued into Sunday evening, when the Madison Fireworks Organization produced a terrific display that was enjoyed by thousands of people along the town’s shoreline.

But it was the Exchange Club of Madison that had the greatest impact on both residents and visitors with Monday’s Fourth of July Parade. Rather than one grand marshal, they chose instead to invite Vietnam-era veterans to serve as grand marshals. Approximately 100 chose to participate and lead the parade, and it was a very moving sight. The cheers and applause from the crowd was overwhelming, as these gentlemen finally received the accolades and thanks that have been withheld from them for well over 40 years. I thank those who participated, those who lost their lives in Vietnam, and those who couldn’t be here, for their service.

Congratulations go to Tony Raccio and the Madison Exchange Club for their decision to honor these veterans, and for producing a perfect tribute to them. And many thanks go to Peter and Lisa Dean of Brother Mike’s Restaurant for hosting lunch and a fitting tribute for them after the parade. It was the perfect conclusion for a perfect weekend.
