All We’ve Gotten is Silence

I am a member of the 200 Tyler Street Committee, and as such I worked diligently with the other members to come up with viable alternatives for the old high school.

Many a night was spent working on plans and letters were sent to members of both political parties in attempt to find support for our efforts.

I was extremely disappointed when Mayor Joseph Maturo, Jr., announced the formation of a Blue Ribbon Commission to find a solution to what would be the best use for the building. Not a single member of our group was asked to serve on the mayor’s hand-picked group!

I attended all the informational meetings, listened to all the various ideas, and came to realize that none of the options of the 200 Tyler Street Committee were being considered. I listened as the mayor’s committee announced its recommendation. While it wasn’t what I had hoped to see, I realized that the die had been cast, and I would support the decision—after all this was supposed to be the option that made the most sense, and was best for the community. The fate of the building was sealed!

It has now been more than four months since the Blue Ribbon Committee delivered its recommendation to Town Hall, and we’ve heard nothing. The mayor stated he wanted this matter over and done, and all we’ve gotten is silence! Maybe that was the intent all along.
