Heard our Voices of Dismay

On April 12, a proposed budget released by the state called for the elimination of education grants to more than 20 Connecticut communities including the shoreline towns of Essex, Westbrook, Lyme, and Old Lyme. That cut would result in more than a $390,000 reduction in revenue to Essex alone; the taxpayers of Essex would have to make up that difference.

State Senator Art Linares, Jr., representing the 33rd District, immediately heard our voices of dismay, and took action to fight this reduction. His efforts to organize a petition against such cuts and ensure all constituents were aware of the situation has resulted in positive progress in restoring education grants.

As I write this letter, the most recent proposal restores just over $150,000 in education grants to Essex. Senator Linares’s efforts in representing Essex and the district should be applauded. No matter where the final numbers fall within the budget, I am encouraged and proud that we have a representative in the state legislature who is looking out for both our kids and our pocketbooks.
