Law Enforcement Needs

There will be an important public hearing on policing in Westbrook on Thursday, May 26 at 7 p.m. in the Multi-Media Room of the Mulvey Municipal Center.

We are currently evaluating, as a municipality, the law enforcement needs of our community and wish to hear from the public any and all issues residents may have regarding enforcement in Westbrook.

Currently, we have three state troopers and six part-time constables. Due to state imposed budgetary restraints, we will, based upon comments at the public hearing, determine how best, moving forward, to deploy our current staffing.

At the Monday, June 6 Board of Selectmen meeting, the Board will appoint an ad hoc committee to review residents’ concerns and determine, among other things, what are the most pressing needs of this community regarding enforcement issues. There is, for example, continued comments regarding speeding and traffic-related matters, especially during the summer months.

I encourage your readers to attend this meeting so that, as a Board of Selectmen, we can develop a charge to the ad hoc committee to determine how best to proceed in the coming months.
