East Haven Animal Shelter Falls Short

On a recent trip to the Animal Shelter to make a donation, I inquired about volunteering for both myself and the students I work with at East Haven High School. I was told by the officer they don’t take volunteers and they really have no need for any. I inquired further—not to clean the grounds, prepare food, walk dogs? His response was the same. He also said if students were to volunteer, they would want to work with animals and that was impossible.

I walked back to my car in disbelief. How unfortunate our Animal Shelter has shut its doors to our community and those who love animals and would like to volunteer their time. What are we saying to our young people, look elsewhere? In the future, I will bring my donations and encourage my students to visit the Cosgrove Animal Shelter in Branford where volunteers are trained and welcomed. Perhaps East Haven should follow suit.
