Non-Stop Spending Spree

The Old Saybrook Grand List of Property Values has been lackluster and this year there is a decrease. The one percent in the Town of Old Saybrook who comprise the town employees and the Volunteer Fire Department are continuing their reckless spending programs.

How can the Board of Education, which is down 300 students, justify an increase in spending of 2.8 percent? Taxpayers are livid that lights were transfered to Valley Regional High School and now the Board of Education is asking for $25,000 for lights and the residents have an injunction! Where is the financial planning? The taxpayers with an overwhelming vote said “No” to an additional boat because we have a fireboat that can be used. First Selectman Carl Fortuna and Police Chief Michael Spera, who receive their paychecks from the taxpayers, tried numerous scenarios to get a boat and succeeded on March 8 with a special town meeting.

When town employees place their needs above the taxpayers needs they should be fired. I urge all taxpayers to write to the Board of Finance, the Board of Education, Police Commission, and the Board Selectman and tell them that a zero budget increase is in order. The Town of Old Saybrook’s non-stop spending spree must end.
