System Hasn’t Been Upgraded

Barry O’Nell’s Nov. 26 letter “WPCA Still Needs Watching” leaves the impression that Phase I of the town’s septic upgrade program has been completed; an impression that suits the needs of Old Saybrook’s recently re-elected First Selectman Carl P. Fortuna, Jr., and the WPCA, but isn’t true. We live in Phase I (13 George Drive, lot 3/242 Cornfield Park) and our system hasn’t been upgraded.

Mr. Fortuna will never authorize legal action to force us to upgrade our system. In February 1997, the Superior Court’s opinion in Timothy R.E. Keeney, Commissioner of Environmental Protection v. Town of Old Saybrook, said that false statements in required reports to the then-Department of Environmental Protection “may be punishable as a criminal offense.” Mr. Fortuna lied in letter of Dec. 2, 2013 to the Department of Energy & Environmental Protection saying that the town had completed upgrades in Cornfield Park.
