Profound Thanks

We wish to offer our profound thanks to the many residents of Westbrook and others who expressed their deep concern regarding the destruction of more than 40 gravestones at the Old Burying Grounds in Westbrook. These are the oldest gravestones in the town, representing our earliest settlers.

The town is requesting, through the court system, restitution for the damages, which are in excess of $22,000. Also, Westbrook is soliciting the assistance of a professional conservator to work with the Historical Society to place the stones in their former positions.

We will keep you posted on any future developments and it may not be until next spring that all of the gravestones will be properly restored.

This community is fortunate that we have many significant historical locations and the Westbrook Historical Society continues to actively monitor and preserve all our sites that are an integral part of our history.
