Every Vote Counts

The highlight of the election, for me, was standing at the polls and greeting Killingworth citizens as they engaged in the democratic process of electing town officials. Starting at 6 a.m., people came to the polls; they came before work, after work, towing trailers that they used for work, with children of all ages, with parents, with spouses, and some with canes, walkers or crutches—all to exercise their right to vote. One person mentioned that he drove to Rhode Island over the weekend to pick up his daughter’s absentee ballot and one person came sprinting in at 7:59 p.m., just making it in before the polls closed. And, knowing that one of the Board of Education seats turned out to be a tie, one of those votes, changed the outcome—proving once again that every vote counts.

In these busy, busy lives we all lead, there is something inspiring about witnessing others carving out time to do their civic duty to have a say in who will hold the seats that play a critical role in the direction and development of our community and its citizens.

So, thanks to all of your readers who came out to vote. I can only speak for myself, but I think the sentiment is shared by others who have been elected, in saying that I will work hard to keep their trust, do a good job as a new member of the Board of Education of RSD 17, and continue to make this a great place to live.
