An Opportunity to See and Hear

Essex Library is to be commended for conducting the 33rd State Senate District debate Sept. 23 at Valley Regional High School. Essex Library Director Richard Conroy deserves special mention for doing a great job as moderator.

The 90-minute debate offered an opportunity to see and hear three candidates vying to represent Chester, Deep River, and Essex along with nine other towns that comprise the 33rd District. The debate also was an important heads up for the impending statewide election Nov. 4.

Connecticut and the Lower Connecticut River Valley towns have many positive qualities and offer remarkable opportunities. Yet, they also face daunting challenges as part of Connecticut involving jobs, business climate, taxes, public debt, education, environment, energy, and social and other problems.

Regardless of one's political views and biases, it is important everyone pay attention to the candidates seeking to represent the district at the Capitol. The recent debate was a good opportunity to get to know more about this year's candidates, and a positive reminder the election is little more than a month away.
