One Good Turn

Recently, I met a friend at the golf driving range in Madison. After a frightful exhibition, we headed to the Dunkin' Donuts in Killingworth for a cup of coffee.

The high school girl behind the counter didn't read our golf caps correctly and asked if we were veterans. We replied in the affirmative, and even showed her our military identification. She then told us there was no charge for our drinks; her father and grandfather were Navy veterans and she was treating us.

We couldn't believe that she was paying the bill, but a co-worker confirmed it. When we left the store, we headed over to a nearby nursery to get a flower or plant as a gift for the young lady. We told the owner what we needed and why, whereupon he took a lovely plant off the shelf, stuck his business card in it, and said, "I'm a veteran, too. There's no charge; just give this to the young lady."

We went back to the store, waited in line, and presented our plant. We told her no good deed goes unnoticed, that she had made our day, and now we wanted to let her know her gift to us was appreciated. She smiled and said, "Now you have made my day."

This sort of thing makes one feel good all over-that there are many fine young people out there; that going through life doing the unnecessary and the unexpected is often rewarded in strange and wonderful ways. By the way, her name is Taylor McPheron in case you know any folks in Killingworth.
