12/18/2013 11:00 PMLiteracy Volunteers Valley Shore (LVVS) thanks everyone who has assisted us in our mission of literacy for all.
Our free program has improved English speaking, reading, and writing for thousands over 33 years. Currently 182 trained volunteers are tutoring more than 203 students from the 11 towns this agency serves. Each year we train and certify an average of 18 new tutors, and yet most months we typically have a waiting list of 9 to 19 students.
It is nothing short of amazing that there continues to be almost 14,000 residents between the ages of 18 and 64 functioning at or below a basic level of literacy in our service area of Guilford, Madison, Killingworth, Clinton, Westbrook, Old Saybrook, Essex, Deep River, Chester, Lyme, and Old Lyme. In order to fulfill our mission of 100 percent literacy for the Valley Shore region, we need continued support from our communities through additional volunteers and tutor training that is provided by our fundraisers, grants, and financial backing from individuals and businesses.
Our gratitude goes to all who have supported LVVS's past successes. I encourage your readers to continue to remember the under-served in their communities through this Christmas season and upcoming year.
