12/04/2013 11:00 PMWe've all heard the expression "it takes a village?" and last weekend that village was Deep River. The Save the Elephant program was an unqualified success thanks to many contributors. On behalf of the Deep River Historical Society, we thank both the Rotary Club and the Town of Deep River for their joint sponsorship and many contributions to the program. Thanks also go to our school superintendent, Dr. Levy; Principal Jennifer Byars for her awards presentation; and teachers Don Perreault and Amy Foster, who organized the outstanding contributions from all three of our schools, including amazing artwork and essays by the students. The presentation by local historian Brenda Milkofsky highlighting our local history with the elephant was outstanding!
In addition, we thank Dick Smith, Jonathan Kastner, and Carol Jones at the Town Hall; Lorianne Penzara-Griswold and Heddy Watrous from the Rotary Club; Kathy Schultz and Rhonda Forristall for organizing the society's ivory collection; John Kennedy for filming the event; Leete Potter for his committee involvement; Cindi Stannard for ticket sales; Sarah Spaner for her help with the student exhibitions; Susan Rooney for reading essays; Caryn Paradis for design help; Ivoryton Library for its photos; and finally, all the Deep River citizens who attended.
The plight of the African elephant appears to have struck a chord among all of us, and learning about Deep River's and Ivoryton's historic connection to this issue has started a dialogue that will continue into the future.
