It Begins with Zombies

On behalf of the Valley-Shore YMCA, I would like to thank all the sponsors, runners, and volunteers who made the first annual Run of the Dead a huge success. While at first glance it might seem odd that the YMCA chose a zombie-themed event, all 400 participants who attended were part of a family-friendly day filled with laughter (and some screams) and fun. Runners between the ages of 14 and 60 scaled walls, leapt over hay bales, crawled under ropes, avoided zombies, and ran (or walked) three miles of twisty trails through Camp Hazen YMCA's beautiful forest.

The event signals the first of many new and exciting events and programs that the Valley-Shore YMCA is undertaking to promote youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility for all people who live on the shoreline. This event is one of several events to raise money to support the Valley-Shore YMCA's Annual Campaign. The Annual Campaign supports programs, scholarships, and special events for all members in our community, regardless of ability to pay.

I would like to thank our major sponsors: Harbor News, Brown and Knapp Group Benefits, Ivoryton Playhouse, Guilford Savings Bank, and Camp Hazen YMCA. Last and certainly not least, I would like to thank the two lead volunteers on our planning committee: Jacqui Waddock from Webster Bank and Mike Storiale from Guilford Savings Bank, as well as our staff lead, Heather Husted.
