10/31/2013 12:00 AMAfter escaping from communist Cuba, my family had to rely temporarily on community soup kitchens to make ends meet. Those soup kitchens helped to get my family through a difficult period in their lives. I was brought up recognizing the value that our soup kitchens and pantries provide to people in need.
The Shoreline Soup Kitchens & Pantries provides approximately 900,000 meals each year, serving residents of Essex, Chester, Clinton, Madison, Old Saybrook, East Lyme, Lyme, Old Lyme, Killingworth, Westbrook, and Deep River. On Oct. 12, I was proud to run in the Hartford Half Marathon to raise money for this great cause. With help from so many, we raised more than $5,100! That money will get stretched very far to help hungry families in our region.
This holiday season and throughout the year, I encourage your readers to consider donating either money or time to help Shoreline Soup Kitchens & Pantries. Call 860-388-1988 to help. No one should go hungry. Together, we can stem this growing crisis.
