Puzzled

The Deep River-Chester Lions Club was bequeathed a contribution by Talcott Scovill, a generous past member and friend, with the request that it be distributed as an annual scholarship for students of Deep River and Chester entering the trades. He was a carpenter himself and wanted to help out students entering trades such as electrician, plumber, HVAC mechanic, culinary arts, hairdressing, or auto mechanics.

We are proud to offer this annual $5,000 scholarship and advertise it with the Valley Regional High School staff, as well as Porter and Chester Institute, Lincoln Tech, and Vinal Tech. We had no applicants this year, and are puzzled by this. We also offer four, $500 scholarships for students entering college and had only one applicant.

We are disappointed by this and have to wonder if the students are just not getting this information. With the costs of schooling now, this money should not have to go begging.
