Should be the First to Say 'No'

So, at the June Board of Education meeting, the board voted to table the vote to increase the salaries of the director of technology, the director of personnel and business, and the superintendent. This seemed like a smart move because the board had just gotten done voting to lay off a number of teachers due to budget cutbacks.

Fast forward to the July meeting, and the members come back from executive session and vote 5-1 in favor of a 2.33 percent increase for these three individuals! Did I miss something from June to July? Did we lay off too many teachers in June so we could give these three, high-earning individuals an even higher salary? The people at the top know what challenges are being faced with the economy, and they should be the first ones to say "No" to an increase. These individuals also received a 2.75, 2.75, and 3.5 percent increase respectively last year.

The June minutes state salaries are being reduced by $553,457 due to layoffs. With three increases at 2.33 percent each, the board should have reduced salaries by a lesser amount.

I thank the one board member who is there to work for the people of the town and the children.

Oh and by the way, have you heard that the superintendent wants to put a beach volleyball court in at the high school? Are we in California?
