An Ode to Deep River's 'Make-it-Happen' Citizens

The story behind "A New Look at the Deep River Green" (Nov. 10) begins three years ago, with Deep River resident and Design Advisory Board Chairman Peter Howard, who initiated the process of upgrading and refurbishing the Green. As the landscape architect retained for the design, I can attest to his enthusiasm and his determination, which drove the project forward. Peter, along with the other members of the Steering Committee, managed the fundraising, design, and construction.

The project could not have been completed so promptly without the active involvement of First Selectman Dick Smith, another "make-it-happen" citizen, who was instrumental in carrying the design through into construction.

A correction: the new trees planted along the road edge of the Green, with their brilliant red and orange fall color, are Red maples (acer rubrum), not Norway maples, which are invasive and turn yellow in the fall.
