Madison native Anthony DePino has been named to the 2022 Collegiate Baseball Freshmen All-America Team based on his performance during his first season with baseball team at the University of Rhode Island (URI). DePino was a four-year member of the baseball team at Daniel Hand High School before graduating in 2021.

DePino helped power Rhode Island’s offense by finishing the 2022 season with a .281 batting average and 26 extra-base hits, including 16 home runs, marking the most homers ever by a Rams’ rookie. He also drew 41 walks on the year, setting a new single-season record at URI in the process.

Just the 13th player in program history to earn All-American recognition, DePino, an infielder, ranked second on the Rhode Island baseball team in both slugging percentage (.635) and on-base percentage (.436). He also racked up three Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week awards and was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team, as well as the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association All-New England First Team.

DePino is the fourth player to be recognized as a Freshman All-American under current Head Coach Raphael Cerrato at URI, a Division I school in Kingston, Rhode Island. Last year, DePino helped the Hand baseball team win the Class L State Tournament for the first state title in program history, earning All-Southern Connecticut Conference First Team honors as a senior captain for the Tigers.
