06/19/2022 12:00 AMSenior Morgan Veth competed on behalf of the Hand boys’ outdoor track team at the CIAC Decathlon last week, while two athletes also represented the Tigers in the 2,000-Meter Steeplechase. Both competitions took place at Willow Brook Park in New Britain.
Veth claimed second place in the high jump with a height of 6 feet-2 inches when he participated in the first day of the CIAC Decathlon on June 14. Veth also finished fifth in the 100-meter dash by running a time of 11.40 seconds. Veth additionally finished 15th for the long jump (18-8) and came in 39th place in the shot put (27-10.75) while representing the Tigers.
Veth had recently finished first in both the high jump (5-10) and the long jump (21-3) at the SCC East Sectional Championship. He went on to place second in the high jump at the SCC Championship (6-2), third in the Class MM State Championship (6-2), and 11th at the State Open (6-0). Veth also finished second in the long jump at SCCs (20-10.25) and placed sixth in states (20-3.25).
On June 15, sophomore Chris Bonavita and freshman Max Wheeler competed for Hand in the 2,000-Meter Steeplechase at Willow Brook Park. Bonavita finished in 16th place for the steeplechase race by reaching the finish line in a time of 7:27.31. Wheeler came in 38th place by recording a time of 8:26.58 in the event.
Bonavita competed alongside junior Harrison Grenier, senior Jack O’Keefe, and junior Nick Montana in a 4x800 relay that saw success in the postseason this spring. The Tigers’ 4x800 quartet finished second at sectionals (8:20.65), third at SCCs (8:16.49), third in states (8:15.06), and 16th at the Open (8:21.97).
