Cavrell Competes for H-K in CIAC Decathlon; Cougars See Several Athletes Run the Steeplechase


Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Haddam-Killingworth boys’ outdoor track team was represented by Kevin Cavrell in the CIAC Decathlon last week, and the Cougars also saw three runners take part in the CIAC’s Steeplechase events. The decathlon was held on June 14 and 15, while the steeplechase took place on June 15 with both competitions hosted at Willow Brook Park.

Cavrell finished in 20th place among 50 participants at the CIAC Decathlon, scoring 4,547 points between his 10 events. Cavrell’s best performance came in a fourth-place finish in the shot put with a toss of 38 feet-10.5 inches. Cavrell also finished 11th for both the high jump (5-6) and the javelin (120-5) to go with 14th-place showings in the discus (83-11) and the 400 (53.76).

Cavrell finished in 19th place for the 100-meter dash by sprinting to a time of 11.80. Cavrell also finished 22nd in the 110 hurdles (19.50), 23rd for the 1,500 (5:21.81), and 26th in the long jump (17-11.75) on his way to placing 22nd overall.

Earlier in the postseason, Cavrell ran with junior Alexander Lara, junior Jayden Fulton, and freshman Matthew Lara on a 4x400 relay that finished in third place (3:37.13) at the Shoreline Conference Championship.

On the same day the Cavrell was finishing the decathlon, junior Tyler Robinson competed for H-K in the CIAC 2,000-Meter Steeplechase, while seniors Caleb Freeman and Andrew Hedges took part in the 3,000-Meter Steeplechase at Willow Brook Park.

Robinson finished in 22nd place for the 2,000-Meter Steeplechase by posting a time of 7:33.42 on behalf of the Cougars. Freeman finished ninth in the 3,000-Meter Steeplechase with a time of 10:48.06, and Hedges came in 10th place by completing the course with a mark of 10:51.73.

Freeman had previously finished second in the 3,200 at Shorelines (4:37.54), took fourth place at states (9:41.41), and then finished 12th at the State Open (9:53.54). Freeman also placed second in the 1,600 at the Shoreline meet (4:37.54).

Hedges finished third in the 1,600 (4:41.11) and the 3,200 (10:34.77) at Shorelines and then finished sixth for the 3,200 at the state meet (9:58.35). Hedges and Freeman also joined forces with Alexander Lara and Matthew Lara to compete on a 4x800 relay that finished third at both Shorelines (8:25.57) and states (8:15.30) and then came in 13th place at the Open (8:19.08).

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Haddam-Killingworth girls’ outdoor track team had two athletes competed in the CIAC 2,000-Meter Steeplechase that was held at Willow Brook Park on June 14. Senior Brianna Minervino and Ava DiMatteo participated in the steeplechase on behalf of the Cougars last week.

Minervino finished with a time of 8:47.05 and came in 38th place for H-K at the CIAC’s 2,000-meter Steeplechase. DiMatteo hit the finish line with a mark of 9:41.46 to place 55th in the competition.

Minervino ran on a pair of relays that turned in big performances during the recent postseason. H-K’s 4x400 relay of Minervino, senior Brianna Nugent, junior Leah Sosnowski, and sophomore Mariella Fulcher finished in second place at the Shoreline Conference Championship (4:18.68), took fifth place at the Class M State Championship (4:17.05), and then came in 15th place at the State Open (4:10.14). The Cougars’ 4x800 relay of junior Isabel Berardino, freshman Olivia Macaluso, Minervino, and senior Charlotte Selmer finished second in Shorelines (10:15.02) and placed sixth at states (10:08.82).
