Malchiodi and Engels Win Shoreline Doubles Title for the Knights; Farnoli, Bache Reach Respective Singles Finals

Boys’ Tennis

The Westbrook boys’ tennis team saw its duo of senior Mason Malchiodi and junior Ryan Engels take the title in the Shoreline Conference Doubles Tournament that took place at Old Lyme and Morgan on May 23 and 24. Malchiodi and Engels won a three-set battle against Valley Regional’s Kaid Matesky and Aidan Garrity to claim the Shoreline doubles crown, rallying to win the match by the score of 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Malchiodi and Engels earned three straight-sets victories on their way to making it to the championship match. In the semifinals, Malchiodi and Engels won a 6-2, 6-3 decision versus Romain Le Floc’h and Matt Piela of East Hampton. The Knights were also represented by the duo of junior Enzo Adorno and sophomore John Freund and in the tournament.

Sophomore Elliot Koplas won his first contest for Westbrook in the Shoreline Conference 1-2 Singles Tournament to make it into the quarterfinals. Senior Joey Caslin also competed for Westbrook in the tourney. Senior Jonah Freund participated in the 3-4 Singles Tournament for the Knights.

Girls’ Tennis

Senior Julia Farnoli made it to the final of the Shoreline Conference 1-2 Singles Tournament, while freshman Megan Bache reached the final of the 3-4 Singles Tournament on behalf of the Westbrook girls’ tennis team last week. The tournaments were held at Old Saybrook and Westbrook on May 23 and 24.

Farnoli notched three victories en route to making it to the final of the Shoreline’s 1-2 Singles Tournament, including a 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 win over Abigail Sicuranza in the semifinal round. Farnoli then took a 6-2, 6-1 loss against Piper Remilliard of Coginchaug in the championship match. Senior Gianni Salisbury also competed for the Knights in the tournament.

Bache posted a pair of straight-set wins to advance to the title match of the 3-4 Singles Tournament. In the final, Bache took a 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5) to defeat Elaina Morosky of Old Lyme in a three-set marathon. Junior Caroline Dias also represented Westbrook in the tournament.

Westbrook’s team of senior Bree Koplas and junior Delaney Belcourt won two matches to reach the semifinals of the Shoreline Conference Doubles Tournament. The duo of senior Jami Sacco and sophomore Olivia Palumbo also made it to the semifinals after winning a quarterfinal contest. The team of senior Xan Zanzalari and junior Adriana Stranieri won their first matchup of the draw.

Softball

The Westbrook-Portland (W-P) co-op softball team came away with a win and a loss from the final week of its season. The Knights posted an overall record of 6-14 on the year.

W-P was awarded a forfeit victory for a game that had been scheduled to take place versus Bassick at home on May 23. Then on May 25, the Knights hosted Stafford for their season finale and 20-1 defeat in the matchup.

Baseball

The Westbrook baseball team hosted the Career-Hillhouse co-op squad for its final matchup of the 2022 season last week. The Knights took a 13-2 loss in the contest to finish with a record of 0-20 on the year.
