The Westbrook girls’ tennis team concluded its regular season with a record of 15-2 after winning both of its matches last week. The Knights, who have qualified for the Class S State Tournament, notched shutout victories against Morgan and Cromwell to finish their regular season on a high note.
Westbrook claimed a 7-0 road victory versus Morgan on May 16. The following afternoon, the Knights hosted Cromwell and blanked the Panthers by a 7-0 score in their regular-season finale.
Senior Julia Farnoli earned a 6-1, 6-2 win for the Knights in the No. 1 singles match against Cromwell. Senior Gianni Salisbury posted a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles; freshman Megan Bache netted a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles; and junior Caroline Dias won her No. 4 singles match by the score of 6-1, 3-6, 13-11.
Westbrook’s No. 1 doubles team of senior Bree Koplas and junior Delaney Belcourt claimed a 6-1, 6-1 victory. The No. 2 team of senior Jami Sacco and sophomore Olivia Palumbo won a 6-1, 6-2 decision; while the No. 3 team of senior Xan Zanzalari and junior Adriana Stranieri won their contest by a 6-2, 6-2 final.
Boys’ Tennis
The Westbrook boys’ tennis team won its last two matches of the regular season to finish with a record of 14-2. The Knights, who will be competing in the Class S State Tournament, earned home victories against Morgan and Cromwell to wrap up regular-season action last week.
Westbrook started off its week by claiming a 4-3 win versus Morgan in a home match on May 16. Two days later, the Knights hosted Cromwell and blanked the Panthers by a 7-0 score at Westbrook High School.
Softball
The Westbrook-Portland (W-P) co-op softball team moved to 3-15 on the season after gaining a split of last week’s matchups. The Knights have two games remaining in the regular season.
The Knights took a 16-1 defeat against Stafford in a road game on May 17. Senior Tara Fitzgibbons went 1-for-3 with a run scored, while senior Leah May was 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI.
The next day, W-P hosted Holy Family and won the game by the final score of 11-2. Senior Gabrielle Cordon earned the win on the mound and also went 1-for-1 with 2 runs and an RBI at the plate. Fitzgibbons went 2-for-3 with a run scored and 3 RBI; May was 2-for-2 with a run, a double, and 2 RBI; and freshman Madeleine Valiante went 1-for-2 with 3 runs and an RBI.
Baseball
The Westbrook baseball team took three defeats last week to move to 0-19 with one contest left in the regular season.
On May 16, Westbrook took a 14-3 defeat to North Branford in a home game. Two days later, the Knights hosted St. Bernard and lost the contest by an 11-0 score. Then on May 21, the Knights played a road game versus Whitney Tech and dropped a 3-2 decision to the Owls.
Boys’ Outdoor Track
The Westbrook boys’ outdoor track team participated in the Running Rams Invitational at Old Saybrook High School on May 13. The Knights finished in sixth place out of 25 teams by scoring 40 points at the meet.
Westbrook’s 4x100 relay team of junior Vinny Naccarato, junior John Grace, junior James Grace, and junior Brandon Naccarato finished in first place with a time of 44.74 seconds at the Running Rams Invite. Senior Brett Metcalfe took first place in the high jump with a personal-record height of 6 feet-2, while James Grace placed first in the 200 with a time of 23.70.
Brandon Naccarato claimed third place in the 100 hurdles (11.66) for the Knights. Westbrook’s 4x400 relay came in seventh place by recording a time of 3:59.2.
Girls’ Outdoor Track
The Westbrook girls’ outdoor track squad finished in 16th place among 22 schools with 15 points scored at the Running Rams Invitational meet in Old Saybrook on May 13.
Junior Halley Pierson finished in third place for the pole vault by clearing the bar at 9 feet for Westbrook. Sophomore Leticia Pires claimed third place in the triple jump with a personal-record distance of 32 feet-2 inches.
Sophomore Hannah Freund finished seventh in the long jump (14-6) and placed eighth in the 200 (28.5), qualifying for states in the latter event. Freshman Lily Freeman qualified for Shorelines in both the 800 (2:47) and the 1,600 (6:13) on behalf of the Knights. Sophomore Kayla Prisley qualified for states in the 200 by running a time of 28.8 seconds.
