Old Saybrook Girls’ Lacrosse Completes Regular Season at 15-1; Golf Squad Grabs Victory Over East Hampton

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Old Saybrook girls’ lacrosse team capped off its regular season by claiming victory in a pair of home games last week. The Rams defeated Morgan and Valley Regional to finish the regular season with an overall record of 15-1. Old Saybrook is competing in the Shoreline Conference Tournament this week and will then go on to play in the Class S State Tournament.

Old Saybrook started off its week by posting a 12-6 win versus Morgan in a home game on May 17. Senior Lily Cody scored 6 goals to go with 1 assist in the victory. Freshman Gretchen Kawecki had 2 goals and 1 assist for the Rams. Senior Grace Adams netted 2 goals, sophomore Amelia Sigersmith had 1 goal with 1 assist, and junior Chelsea Heinke added 1 goal for Old Saybrook. Senior goalie Samantha Wakelee made 13 saves in the winning effort.

Two days later, the Rams hosted Valley Regional and edged out the Warriors by the final score of 12-11. Cody scored 5 goals in the victory, while Kawecki had 4 goals with 1 assist for the Rams. Heinke scored 2 goals, Sigersmith had 1 goal and 1 assist, and freshman Ayla D’Anna dished out 2 assists.

Wakelee made 22 saves to get the win in goal for Old Saybrook. Head Coach Dick Shriver said that the Rams were additionally bolstered by an exceptional defensive effort from seniors Alexa Coty, Lilly Sigersmith, Sophia Gormley, and Lorea Aramendi, along with junior Weston Richards.

Old Saybrook played Haddam-Killingworth in a Shoreline Conference Tournament semifinal game on May 24 (after press time). If the Rams won that game, they will face the winner of North Branford and Valley Regional in the league final on Thursday, May 26 at 5 p.m. at the Indian River Complex.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Old Saybrook boys’ lacrosse team played a pair of road games to close out the regular season last week. The Rams took losses in both contests to finish the regular season with a record of 5-11.

On May 17, Old Saybrook an 18-12 defeat at Morgan. Two days later, the Rams were back on the road to face Valley Regional and dropped a 12-8 decision to the Warriors.

Boys’ Golf

The Old Saybrook boys’ golf team played three matches last week and came away with one win to put its record at 2-10 for the season.

Old Saybrook started off the week by taking a 171-178 home loss to Hale-Ray at Fenwick Golf Course on May 18. Sophomore Rylan Murphy posted the Rams’ low score with a 42 for the round. Sophomore Connor Casella shot a 43, and sophomore Drew Kulman and junior Adam Dower shot a 46.

The following day, the Rams hosted Portland and took a 156-178 defeat against the Highlanders. Kulman turned in Old Saybrook’s low total with a score of 36 on the afternoon. Cassella scored a 44, while Murphy carded a 45 for the Rams. Junior Peter Wisialowski shot a 53, and sophomore Jacob Speed posted a score of 56.

Then on May 20, Old Saybrook notched a 186-281 victory against East Hampton in a road match at Black Birch Golf Course.

Boys’ Tennis

The Old Saybrook boys’ tennis team finished its regular season with a victory versus Portland last week. On May 17, the Rams hosted Portland and edged out the Highlanders by a 3-2 final to complete the regular season with a record of 4-10.

Girls’ Tennis

The Old Saybrook girls’ tennis team hosted Portland for its final contest of the regular season on May 17. The Rams took a 5-2 defeat versus the Highlanders to finish with a record of 4-10 for regular-season play this year.

Softball

The Old Saybrook softball team took losses in its last four games of the regular season to finish with a record of 1-16.

The Rams took an 18-5 defeat to East Hampton in a road game on May 16. The next day, Old Saybrook was back on the road to face Haddam-Killingworth and lost the contest by a 21-0 score. On May 18, Old Saybrook took a 23-9 home loss against Cromwell. Then on May 21, the Rams took a 15-0 defeat at Fitch in their regular-season finale.

Baseball

On the heels of 14-4 regular season, the Old Saybrook baseball team will open play in the Shoreline Conference Tournament this week. After that, the Rams will compete in the Class S State Tournament. Old Saybrook is in its first campaign with Head Coach Ryan Fraser this spring.

Old Saybrook has the No. 2 seed in the Shoreline Conference Tournament and hosted No. 7 Old Lyme in the quarterfinals on May 23 (after press time). With a win, the Rams would have hosted the winner of No. 4 Haddam-Killingworth and No. 5 North Branford in the semis on May 24 (after press time). The Shoreline Conference final is at Palmer Field at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 27.
