05/15/2022 12:00 AMThe Deep River Horseshoe League hosted Week 2 of its 67th season at the First Congregational Church on May 5. With the weather warming up a bit from the first week of action, 36 of the 54 competitors improved their scores over the previous week, and average scores were up in each of the A, B, and C divisions.
The Marlins earned their second sweep in a row by claiming a 6-0 victory against the Yankees to improve to 12-0 on the season. Mark Goodale of Clinton was the top scorer in the A Division with a series of 141 on the night. Goodale posted season highs for points in a game with 45 and ringers in a game with 13 to lead his team to the win.
The Pirates are in second place at 10-2 following a 6-0 sweep versus the Angels. Skip Robinson of Guilford led the Pirates to the shutout victory.
The Rangers defeated the Reds by a 5-1 final and were the top scoring team of the night with 324 points, 67 ringers, and 5 doubles. Old Lyme resident Joe Heery's 124 series was the second highest in the A Division. Higganum resident Frank Durinick's 117 series was the second best in the B Division. Guilford resident Mike Beckwith's 83 series tied his personal best and was the second highest in the C Division.
Hamden resident Butch Carotenuto of the Dodgers dominated the statistics in the B Division in his team's 3-3 split against the Braves. Carotenuto, who has been throwing with a unique back multi-flip toss for more than 50 years, recorded the highest series (120), as well as the most ringers in a series (33), ringers in a game (10), and doubles in a series (8) during Week 2 play.
After Goodale and Heery in the A Division, Old Lyme resident Pudge Goodrich finished with the third-best series with a 121. Behind Carotenuto and Durinick in the B Division was Killingworth resident Todd Nuhn with the third-highest series of 107. The top three series in the C Division were tallied by Deep River resident Dave Atkinson (85), Beckwith (83), and East Hartford resident Deb Scully (81).
With Marlins (12-0) in first place and the Pirates (10-2) in second, the Cardinals are holding down third place with their record of 8.5-3.5. The Rangers are in fourth place at 8-4. The rest of standings shake out as follows: Dodgers (7.5-4.5), Tigers (7.5-4.5), Cubs (7-5), Giants (7-5), Orioles (6.5-5.5), Padres (6-6), White Sox (6-6), Royals (4-5-7.5), Mets (3.5-8.5), Yankees (3-9), Braves (3-9), Reds (2.5-9.5), and Angels (2-10).
