The Hand boys’ golf team improved to 7-3 by winning all four of its matchups last week. The Tigers earned two wins versus Notre Dame-West Haven to go with victories against Shelton and Morgan to put together an undefeated week on the greens.
The Tigers opened up the posting a 173-188 home win over Shelton at Madison Country Club on May 9. Junior Reece Scott was the match medalist with his score of 39 for the round. Junior Matt Gagliardi turned in scorecard of 40 for the Tigers.
The following day, Hand played a road match against Notre Dame-West Haven and edged out the Green Knights by the score of 167-168 at Race Brook Country Club. Scott carded a 40 and finished in a tie for medalist honors with Will Giaquinto of Notre Dame. Freshman Matt McManus came in with a 41 from the No. 5 spot in Hand’s lineup to help the Tigers turn a 3-stroke deficit into a 1-point win.
Then on May 11, Hand notched a 159-168 victory versus Morgan in a road match at Clinton Country Club. Scott garnered medalist honors by shooting an even-par 36 for the Tigers. Gagliardi posted a score of 37, while sophomore Kasimir Lesnik finished with a 42.
The Tigers returned home to face Notre Dame-West Haven the next day and claimed a 158-169 victory over the Green Knights. Scott and senior David Ginsburg both scored a 38 for the Tigers, sharing medalist recognition with Notre Dame’s Carter Slowik. Ginsburg’s score marked his best round of the season thus far. Gagliardi shot a 43, and McManus carded a 43 for Hand.
Girls’ Golf
The Hand girls’ golf team played three matches last week and came away with a win, a loss, and a tie. The Tigers now have a record of 2-6-2 on the year.
On May 9, Hand took a 199-236 home loss versus St. Paul at Madison Country Club. The next day, Hand faced Mercy on the road and the two sides played to a 223-223 tie at Lyman Orchards Golf Course. Then on May 11, the Tigers hosted Lauralton Hall and claimed a 212-216 victory over the Crusaders.
Boys’ Outdoor Track
The Hand boys’ outdoor track team capped off an undefeated season and claimed the SCC Hammonasset Division title by sweeping a tri-meet at home last week. The Tigers earned wins over East Haven (138-12) and Notre Dame-West Haven (104-46) on May 9 to finish the regular season with a record of 10-0 and a divisional title in their grasp.
Girls’ Outdoor Track
The Hand girls’ outdoor track team finished its regular season by splitting a tri-meet on its home turf on May 9. The Tigers earned an 84-66 win versus East Haven and took a 102-48 loss against Sacred Heart Academy to gain the split.
Senior Aria Foligno finished first in the 100 (13.3) for the Tigers at the meet. Hand also received first-place finishes from junior Michelle Jiang in the 200 (28.3), junior Julia Coric in the 400 (64.6), senior Meryl Sullivan in the 800 (2:32.9), and junior Adelynn Arroyo in the 3,200 (12:32.4).
Senior Riley Caruso claimed first place in the pole vault (7-6) for Hand. The Tigers’ 4x400 relay of Lilly McFadden, Coric, Sullivan, and junior Vivian Glaser also finished in first place (4:30.6).
Boys’ Lacrosse
The Hand boys’ lacrosse team stands at 11-3 on the season after winning all three of its three matchups last week.
The Tigers started off the week by claiming a 15-6 home win against Amity at the Surf Club on May 10. Junior Will Kleine scored 4 goals and had 1 assist, while fellow junior Sam Sisk had 2 goals to go with 3 assists for Hand. Senior Declan DiProspero and freshman PJ O’Hanlon both scored 3 goals in the victory.
Senior Kevin Sandor scored 2 goals, while fellow seniors Patch Flanagan and Jack Balletto contributed 2 assists apiece for the Tigers. Sophomore Chase Docker added 1 goal in the win. Sophomore Jack Orlando made 3 saves in goal, and Sean Lynch stopped 4 shots in net.
Two days later, Hand hosted Sheehan and doubled up the Titans by the final score of 14-7. The Tigers closed out their week by claiming a 16-3 win versus Newtown in a road game on May 14.
Girls’ Lacrosse
The Hand girls’ lacrosse team moved to 9-6 on the year with defeats in two recent road games.
On May 10, the Tigers took a 12-10 road loss against Amity. Three days later, Hand was back on the road to face Cheshire and dropped an 11-9 decision against the Rams. Seniors Kacie Wines and Karleigh Kokoruda both scored 3 goals for Hand in the game. Junior Lydia Doraz had 2 goals with 2 assist, while junior Maci Pellegrino scored 1 goal.
Girls’ Tennis
The Hand girls’ tennis team played four matches last week and came away with two wins to put the Tigers’ record at 8-5 this season.
Hand took a 4-3 loss against Guilford in a road match on May 9. Senior Claire Langille claimed a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles for the Tigers. Hand’s No. 1 doubles team of seniors Breanna Colonese-DiBello and Zhu Zhu Berger notched a 6-1, 6-2 win; while the team of senior Bella Vejar and junior Libby Rogers posted a 6-0, 6-0 shutout in the No. 2 doubles duel.
The next day, the Tigers were back on the road to face Cheshire and edged out the Rams by a 5-2 score. Junior Laila Haraj-Sai (6-2, 6-4) and freshman Ella Helfrich (6-2, 7-5) prevailed at the No. 2 and 3 singles spots, respectively, for Hand. The doubles teams of Colonese-DiBello and Berger (6-4, 6-4), Vejar and Rogers (6-2, 6-2), and senior Ella Scarice and sophomore Teagan Ariyan (6-2, 2-6, 10-7) were also victorious.
Then on May 13, Hand netted a 4-3 win versus North Haven in Madison. Langille earned a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles. The Tigers’ doubles teams of Colonese-DiBello/Berger (6-0, 6-0), Vejar/Rogers (6-4, 6-2), and Scarice/Ariyan (6-4, 6-3) also posted victories. Scarice and Ariyan rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the second set to win 6 games in a row and clinch the victory for the Tigers.
Two days later, the Tigers hosted Lauralton Hall and took a 4-3 defeat in the contest. Helfrich won a 6-1, 6-1 decision at No. 3 singles, while freshman Antoinette Lowy claimed a 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 4 singles match. Hand’s No. 2 doubles team of Scarice and Ariyan won their contest by the score of 7-6, 10-8.
Baseball
The Hand baseball squad came away with a split of four recent games and now has a record of 11-6 on the season.
The Tigers edged out West Haven by a 4-3 score in a home game on May 9. Senior David Antonetti pitched a complete game to get the win for Hand, scattering 8 hits and striking out 4 batters. Senior Jeff Pinover had 2 doubles with 2 RBI for the Tigers. Senior Will Kranzler had an RBI single and also hit a triple, while sophomore Ben Kuja doubled and scored a run.
The day after that, Hand took an 11-10 home loss to Jonathan Law. Kuja went 3-for-5 with a triple and 3 RBI. Sophomore Will Patla and Kranzler both had 2 hits for Hand. Senior Axl Pildner hit an RBI triple and scored 2 runs.
On May 11, Hand took a 6-3 defeat against Fairfield Prep in a road game at Fairfield University. Kuja was 1-for-2 with a 2-run double in the contest. Junior Troy Piascik, Kranzler, and Pildner each had 2 hits.
The Tigers came back to grab a 15-0 victory versus Wilbur Cross at Daniel Hand High School on May 13. Antonetti, senior Ryan Knight, and sophomore Johnny Reh combined on a 2-hit shutout to lead the Tigers to the win. Senior Will Bazenas went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI, Kranzler was 2-for-2 with 2 triples and 2 RBI, and Pinover had 2 hits with 3 RBI. Senior Jack Kayal, senior Evan Mastrobattisto, and Kuja each hit a triple in the win.
Softball
The Hand softball team picked up one win between its four games last week to move to 9-7 this year.
Hand began its week by posting an 18-0 home win versus Wilbur Cross on May 9. The following afternoon, the Tigers took a 7-6 road loss against Foran. On May 11, the Tigers dropped a 7-6 decision to Amity in a road game. Two days later, Hand hosted Guilford and took a 6-0 defeat to the Grizzlies.
Boys’ Volleyball
The Hand boys’ volleyball team hosted Amity for its lone matchup of the week on May 9. The Tigers took a 3-2 defeat against the Spartans to move to 3-11 for the season.
