Barthel Gets 100th Hit as Easties Improve to 15-2; Boys’ Tennis Nets Two Victories

Softball

The East Haven softball team improved its record to 15-2 on the season after winning all three of its games last week. The Yellowjackets posted victories over North Haven and Shelton before defeating Cheshire to close out the week.

The Easties kicked off their week by earning an 8-3 road win versus North Haven on May 9. East Haven, which had already clinched the SCC Oronoque Division title the previous week, finished divisional play with a record of 8-0 with this victory.

Senior Lena Barthel recorded her 100th career hit with the Yellowjackets by blasting a leadoff home run on the game’s first pitch. Junior Arielle Dupree homered in the second inning, Barthel went yard again in the third, and senior Emilee Bishop followed Barthel with a home run in the third. Bishop also pitched a complete game with 7 strikeouts and 0 walks.

Two days later, the Yellowjackets were on the road to play Shelton and rallied for a 6-3 win versus the Gaels. East Haven scored 4 runs in the top of the top seventh inning to erase a 3-2 deficit, stringing together 5 singles in a row. Dupree started the rally with a single, after which junior Adriana Franceschi reached on a bunt single. Freshman Gianna Santoro then drove in Dupree to tie the game, followed by a 2-run single from Barthel that gave the Easties the lead. Bishop then drove home Barthel for the fourth run of the frame.

Bishop, Santoro, and senior Jilien Ayala all had 2 hits in the victory with Santoro also getting 3 RBI. Bishop pitched a 4-hitter for the Yellowjackets, walking one and striking out 7 again.

Then on May 13, East Haven hosted Cheshire and claimed a 15-2 win against the Rams in 5 innings. The Easties put the game away by scoring 9 runs during a big third inning. Bishop gave up 4 hits and no walks while striking out 11 in 5 innings pitched. She also had 2 doubles and 3 runs scored in the win.

Barthel had a double and a homer with 3 runs scored and 3 RBI for East Haven. Ayala had 2 doubles with 2 runs and 3 RBI, Fowler had 2 RBI, freshman Lexi Heaphy had a double with 2 RBI, and Santoro produced 3 RBI.

Baseball

The East Haven baseball team hit the diamond to play five games in a six-day stretch last week. The Yellowjackets came away from the week with one victory to move to 2-15 on the season.

On May 9, East Haven took a 12-2 road loss to Foran. The next day, the Yellowjackets were back on the road to face North Haven and lost the game by a 6-2 score.

Then on May 11, the Yellowjackets played a home game versus Jonathan Law and took an 8-5 loss in the contest. Junior Ryan Vallie had 3 hits for East Haven. Freshman Janvier Diaz had 2 hits with 2 RBI.

East Haven went on to take a 15-4 road loss against Shelton on May 13. The following day, the Easties played a road game against Wilbur Cross and claimed an 8-1 victory versus the Governors.

Boys’ Tennis

The East Haven boys’ tennis team came away with a split of four recent contests and is now 4-13 on the season. The Yellowjackets netted two wins versus Wilcox Tech to go with losses against Branford and Notre Dame-West Haven in recent play.

East Haven started off the week by earning a 4-3 road victory over Wilcox Tech on May 9. The next day, East Haven hosted Branford and lost to the Hornets by a 7-0 score.

On May 11, East Haven took a 7-0 loss to Notre Dame-West Haven in a road match at the University of New Haven. The Yellowjackets wrapped up their week by notching a 5-2 home win against Wilcox Tech in a Saturday morning matchup on May 14.

Girls’ Tennis

The East Haven girls’ tennis team took four defeats last week to move to 6-9 on the year.

East Haven took a 4-3 loss to Foran in a home match on May 9. East Haven’s No. 1 doubles team of senior Camryn Lendroth and junior Isabella Olszewski claimed a 6-0, 6-2 victory for the Yellowjackets. The No. 2 doubles team of senior Karlee Lynn and junior Melania Korenovsky earned a 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) win; and the No. 3 team of senior Christina Vera and junior Diya Patel notched a 7-5, 6-2 victory.

Two days later, the Yellowjackets took a 7-0 defeat against Mercy at Wesleyan University. On May 13, East Haven hosted Sacred Heart Academy and took a 7-0 loss to the Sharks. The next day, East Haven lost to Branford by a 7-0 score in a road match.

Boys’ Golf

The East Haven boys’ golf team moved to 9-4 on the season after winning one of its three matchups last week. The Yellowjackets took losses against Foran and Cheshire before defeating Hillhouse in their last match of the week.

East Haven took a 197-209 defeat versus Foran in a road match at Grassy Hill Country Club on May 9. Senior Nick Sorrentino, sophomore Mike Savo, and sophomore Nick Vance all shot a 52 for East Haven. Junior Dom Plano finished with a score of 53.

The next day, the Yellowjackets faced Cheshire on the road and lost the contest by the score of 165-203. Plano posted East Haven’s best score with a 46 for the afternoon. Savo shot a 50, Sorrentino carded a 52, and senior Norah Rome scored a 55 for the Yellowjackets.

The day after that, the Easties competed against Hillhouse at Alling Memorial Golf Club and claimed a 163-269 win over the Academics. Savo collected medalist honors by scoring a low total of 36 on the round. Senior Ethan Roach and Sorrentino both shot a 42, while Plano recorded a score of 43 in the victory.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The East Haven girls’ outdoor track team took two defeats in a meet at Daniel Hand High School on May 9. The Yellowjackets took an 84-66 loss against Hand and lost to Sacred Heart Academy by the final score of 99-50.

East Haven recorded multiple first-place performances in the meet. Junior Alice Stettinger claimed first place in the shot put (32-6), the discus (99-10), and the javelin (106-1) for the Yellowjackets. Senior Morgan D’Auria finished first in the long jump (16-1.75) and the triple jump (31-11.5). Sophomore Erica Canfield took first place in the 100 hurdles (17.9) and the 300 hurdles (52.3) for East Haven.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The East Haven boys’ outdoor track competed against Hand and Notre Dame-West Haven in a tri-meet at Daniel Hand High School last week. East Haven took losses versus both Hand (138-12) and Notre Dame (129-21) in the contest on May 9. Junior Dom Salato finished first in the javelin with a throw of 137 feet-2 inches for the Yellowjackets.
