Maryanne Daniel of Clinton set a pair of national records in race walking when she recently competed at the 2022 United States Track and Field Association Masters Indoor National Championships. The competition took place at The Armory in New York City from March 18 to 20.

Daniel shattered her own national record for 60-64 age group in the women’s one-mile race walk by recording a time of 8 minutes and 51 seconds in a first-place finish at the Masters Indoor Championships. Daniel bettered the mark that she had set three years ago by more than seven seconds with this performance. The next day, Daniel came back to post a time of 17 minutes and 12 seconds in the 3,000-meter race walk to break the national record and grab the gold medal for that event. Both of Daniel’s marks are the top-ranked times in the world for her age group in 2022.

Daniel and her teammate, Steph Lyness from Guilford, are coached by Daniel’s husband Ron, who was a national champion himself in race walking years ago.

Maryanne Daniel was the top race walker in the United States open division from 1982 to 1989. At the time, she held the open US record for the one-mile (6:31) and the 10K (46:16).

Race walking is an Olympic event and has been since 1904. In race walking, competitors must always maintain some contact with the ground, with the lead foot touching down the instant of or before the rear foot leaves the ground. The leg must be straightened from the moment of heel contact through the vertical position and cannot be bent at the knee.

The CT Race Walkers hold their track workouts every Tuesday night at 6 p.m. at the Ethel Peters Recreational Complex in Clinton and welcome beginners to join.

On Sunday, May 15, the CT Race Walkers will be hosting a one-hour race walk clinic at the Peters Complex at 4 p.m. For info, contact Maryanne Daniel at 203-215-6301.
