Yellowjackets’ Boys’ Track Gets Win Against Prep; Golf Squad Improves to 7-2

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The East Haven boys’ outdoor track team hosted Fairfield Prep for a meet on May 2. The Yellowjackets came out victorious by earning a 73-63 win against Prep at East Haven High School.

Junior Dom Salato took first place in the long jump (19-10.5), the triple jump (37-9.5), and the javelin (126-3) for East Haven at the meet. Freshman Dante Rodriquez won the 300 hurdles (45.87) and the high jump (5-11) for the Yellowjackets.

East Haven also received victories from freshman Alain Ojedas in the 800 (2:44.90), junior Jason Toth in the discus (92-10), and senior Ethar Al-Hawari in the pole vault (6-0). The Easties’ 4x400 relay of Rodriquez, freshman Anthony Fazio, junior Ronald Koye, and sophomore Rich Ackom-Brew finished in first place (4:10.71) in the victory.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The East Haven girls’ outdoor track team hosted Lauralton Hall for a meet last week. The Yellowjackets took a 76-70 loss versus the Crusaders at East Haven High School on May 2.

Senior Morgan D’Auria claimed first place in the long jump (15-5), the triple jump (32-2), and the pole vault (6-0) for the Easties at last week’s meet. Junior Alice Stettinger finished first in the shot put (34-7.5), the discus (91-11), and the javelin (114-0). Senior Emily Mazzucco and sophomore Erica Canfield tied for first in the high jump at 4-8, and Canfield also finished first in the 100 hurdles (18.13) for the Yellowjackets.

Boys’ Golf

The East Haven boys’ golf team hit the links to compete in one meet last week when the Yellowjackets hosted Sheehan on May 5. East Haven claimed a 179-181 victory against the Titans at Alling Memorial Golf Club to put the team’s record at 7-2 for the spring season.

Junior Dom Plano earned medalist honors by shooting a low score of 38 when East Haven defeated Sheehan. Senior Ethan Roach, senior Nick Sorrentino, and sophomore Mike Savo each shot a 46 to help the Yellowjackets prevail.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Branford-East Haven (Bfd-EH) boys’ lacrosse team played two games last week and came away with a pair of victories to improve to 7-5 for the 2022 season. Bfd-EH notched wins over Jonathan Law and Morgan to make for a great week on the field.

Bfd-EH started off its week by posting a 17-8 road victory versus Jonathan Law on May 2. Junior Matt McNulty and junior Sean Bosworth both scored 4 goals and had 1 assist in the win. Freshman Gennaro Pompano scored 3 goals and dished out 3 assists, while junior Alex Milne scored 3 goals to go with 1 assist. Freshman Alex Dombrowski scored 2 goals, senior Cam Paleski had 1 goal and 1 assist, junior Jack Linder scored a goal, and junior Jake Elpi had an assist. Senior goalie Aidan Strebel made 19 saves in net.

Three days later, the Hornets hosted Morgan and defeated the Huskies by the score of 11-3 at Branford High School. Pompano scored 4 goals and had 1 assist in the win. Bosworth scored 3 goals, and Linder had 2 goals. Paleski had 1 goal with 1 assist, McNulty scored a goal, and senior Kevin Lee had an assist. Strebel made 16 saves.

Girls’ Tennis

The East Haven girls’ tennis team traveled to Milford to take on Platt Tech for its lone matchup of the week on May 5. The Yellowjackets posted a 7-0 shutout over Platt Tech at Eisenhower Park to improve their record to 6-5 this season.

Boys’ Tennis

The East Haven boys’ tennis team took three road losses last week to move to 2-11 on the season.

The Yellowjackets took a 7-0 defeat against Foran in a road match on May 3. The next day, East Haven hit the road to face Lyman Hall and lost the contest by a 7-0 score. Then on May 5, East Haven took a 7-0 road loss versus Shelton.

Baseball

The East Haven baseball team hosted Fairfield Prep for its lone game of the week on May 5. East Haven took a 17-3 defeat to the Jesuits at East Haven High School to move to 1-11 on the year. Sophomore PJ Carrangelo had 2 hits for East Haven in the game.
