Westbrook Girls’ Tennis Riding 9-Match Win Streak; Boys’ Tennis Gets Victory Against Old Saybrook

Girls’ Tennis

The Westbrook girls’ tennis team increased its win streak to nine in a row by winning both of its matchups on last week’s schedule. The Knights improved their record to 10-1 this season after defeating Old Saybrook and Portland in their last two contests.

On May 2, Westbrook netted a 6-0 road victory over Old Saybrook. Senior Julia Farnoli claimed a 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 1 singles match for Westbrook. Senior Gianna Salisbury won a 6-0, 6-2 decision at No. 2 singles; freshman Megan Bache earned a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles; and junior Caroline Dias netted a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles. The Knights’ No. 2 doubles team of senior Jami Sacco and sophomore Olivia Palumbo notched a 6-0, 6-1 win; and the No. 3 team of senior Xan Zanzalari and junior Adriana Stranieri also won their match by a 6-0, 6-1 score.

Then on May 5, the Knights hosted Portland and defeated the Highlanders by a 6-1 final at Westbrook High School. Salisbury played No. 1 singles and netted a 6-4, 6-1 victory for the Knights. Bache posted a 6-0, 6-1 win in the No. 2 singles matchup. The team of senior Bree Koplas and junior Delaney Belcourt notched a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles. Palumbo and Sacco posted a 6-0, 6-0 shutout at No. 2 doubles; while Zanzalari and Stranieri netted a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the No. 3 doubles match.

Boys’ Tennis

The Westbrook boys’ tennis team posted a home win over Old Saybrook last week. On May 5, the Knights hosted Old Saybrook and defeated the Rams by a 6-1 score to improve to 7-1 this year.

Softball

The Westbrook-Portland co-op softball team played a road game versus Old Lyme for its lone contest of the week. The Knights took an 18-1 defeat to the Wildcats on May 6 to move to 1-12 on the season.

Baseball

The Westbrook baseball team took two defeats last week to move to 0-14 on the year.

In its first game of the week, Westbrook took a 5-3 road loss against Portland on May 3. Two days later, the Knights were on the road to play Hale-Ray and dropped a 7-2 contest against the Noises.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Westbrook boys’ outdoor track team competed against 24 other schools when the Marty Roberts Invitational took place at Coginchaug High School on May 7.

Senior Brett Metcalfe won the high jump with a height of 5-10 for Westbrook at the meet. The Knights’ 4x100 relay team of junior Vinny Naccarato, junior John Grace, junior James Grace, and junior Brandon Naccarato finished in second place with a time of 45.26. Brandon Naccarato qualified for the final in the 100-meter dash and placed fifth at 11.94. Junior Hever Gomez finished seventh in the 300 hurdles with a time of 46.35.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Westbrook girls’ outdoor track team sent a few athletes to take part in the Marty Roberts Invitational at Coginchaug High School on May 7.

Sophomore Leticia Pires placed third in triple jump with a leap of 30-8 and finished fifth in long jump with a 15-0.5. Junior Halley Pierson took third in pole vault with height of 8-6 and was fourth in long jump with a personal-record, state-qualifying leap of 15-1.25. Sophomore Hannah Freund placed fifth in pole vault by reaching 7-6 for Westbrook.
