North Haven Golf Team Takes 2 of 3; Softball and Baseball Squads Finish Week with Wins

Boys’ Golf

The North Haven boys’ golf team won two of its three matches last week to boost its record to 5-5 on the season. The Nighthawks notched victories versus Wilbur Cross and Foran before taking a loss to Jonathan Law in last week’s contests.

North Haven started off its week by earning a 196-220 road win over Wilbur Cross at Alling Memorial Golf Club on May 2. Sophomore Chris Labanara collected medalist honors by shooting a low score of 46 for the afternoon. Junior Christian Basmadjian shot a 49, sophomore Kevin Lawlor finished with a 50, and senior Brady Connolly and freshman Will Sagnella both scored a 51 for the Nighthawks.

The next day, North Haven hosted Foran and defeated the Lions by the score of 190-210 at Tradition Golf Club. Lawlor and Sagnella shared medalist distinction with both golfers carding a 46 for the round. Basmadjian scored a 48, sophomore Dinny LaDore shot a 50, and Labanara posted a score of 55.

Then on May 4, the Nighthawks took a 189-200 defeat to Jonathan Law in a road match at Orange Hills Country Club. Sagnella (46), Labanara (47), Basmadjian (52), LaDore (55), and Connolly (62) competed for North Haven at the meet.

Softball

The North Haven softball team had two games on its schedule last week and came away from the slate with a split to move to 8-5 for the spring season. The Nighthawks took a loss to Hand before bouncing back with a win against Sacred Heart Academy in recent action.

North Haven hosted Hand on May 3 and was edged out by a 9-8 score. North Haven held a 6-2 lead entering the sixth inning, but the Tigers scored 5 runs in the frame and another run in the seventh to take a 9-6 lead. The Nighthawks rallied for 2 runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Hand was able to hang on for the 1-run victory.

Sophomore Gabby Blanchard hit 2 home runs and had 4 RBI for the Nighthawks. Sophomore Izzy Blanchard and freshman Alyssa DiGiovanna both had 2 hits in the game.

Then on May 3, the Nighthawks played a home game versus Sacred Heart Academy and claimed an 8-2 victory. Senior Caroline Toni had a single and a double with 3 RBI in the win. Junior Maria Lockery had 2 hits and scored 2 runs. Sophomore Reese Hebert earned the win on the mound for her seventh victory of the year.

Baseball

The North Haven baseball team split a pair of home games last week and is now 5-8 this season.

In their first game of the week, the Nighthawks took a 4-3 home loss against Hamden on May 3. Then on May 6, North Haven hosted Cheshire and earned a 6-1 victory versus the Rams.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The North Haven girls’ outdoor track team competed against Sacred Heart Academy in a road meet last week. The Nighthawks took a 122-27 loss to the Sharks in the contest on May 3.

Senior Brooke Waldron finished first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.3 seconds for North Haven at the meet. Waldron also claimed first in the 200 by timing in with a mark of 28.7. Sophomore Erika Fronte won the javelin for the Nighthawks by recording a toss of 85 feet-8 inches.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The North Haven girls’ lacrosse team took defeats in three recent games to move to 4-8 on the year.

On May 4, the Nighthawks took a 17-9 loss to Sheehan in a road game. Sophia Dorio scored 4 goals for North Haven, while fellow senior Eliza O’Connor netted 3 goals in the game. Senior Liz Hansen and senior Ellie Kerzner added 1 goal apiece for the Nighthawks. O’Connor, Dorio, Hansen, Kerzner, senior Riley Minns, and sophomore Catherine Bianchi all had an assist in the contest. Senior goalie Hannah Sommer made 16 saves in net.

Then on May 6, North Haven hit the road to face Branford and took a 20-7 loss to the Hornets. The day after that, the Nighthawks took a 14-10 defeat versus North Branford in a home game at North Haven Middle School.

O’Connor and Dorio both scored 3 goals in the game. Minns scored 2 goals, while Hansen and Bianchi added 1 goal apiece. Sommer had 13 saves for the Nighthawks, who were bolstered by solid defensive efforts from seniors Lauren Bogaert, Erin Johns, Jenna Pine, and Emma Kircaldie, as well as junior Aisling Pretty and sophomore Kylie Pollard.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The North Haven boys’ lacrosse team lost three home games last week to move to 3-9 in the 2022 season.

In its first game of the week, North Haven took a 12-4 home loss against Amity on May 2. Then on May 5, the Nighthawks hosted East Lyme and lost to the Vikings by the score of 16-7. Two days later, the Nighthawks took a 4-2 defeat against Haddam-Killingworth at North Haven Middle School.
