North Branford Golf Sweeps the Week; Softball Squad Wins a Pair

Boys’ Golf

The North Branford boys’ golf team improved to 6-1-2 on the season after winning all three of its matches last week. The Thunderbirds defeated Old Saybrook, Morgan, and Hale-Ray to make for a perfect week on the links.

North Branford began the week by claiming a 177-199 home victory versus Old Saybrook on May 2. Sophomore Jack O’Brien shot a 40 to share medalist honors with Old Saybrook sophomore Drew Kulman. Senior Dakota Cooper carded a 42, freshman Robert Cappella scored a 44, senior Blake Pearson finished with a 51, and senior Jalen Rossicone shot a 55 for North Branford.

The next day, the T-Birds hosted Morgan and won the contest by the score of 176-192. O’Brien was the medalist for the match by posting a low total of 39 on the day. Cappella (41), Cooper (44), junior Drew Girardi (52), and Pearson (53) also competed for the T-Birds at the meet.

Then on May 5, North Branford notched a 186-196 win against Hale-Ray in a road match at Black Birch Golf Course. Cooper finished with a score of 43 for the T-Birds, while Cappella and O’Brien both shot a 45 in the victory. Girardi scored a 53, and Rossicone finished with a 59 for North Branford.

Softball

The North Branford softball team won both of last week’s contests to improve its record to 9-5 for the season. The Thunderbirds posted shutouts over East Hampton and Morgan in recent action.

North Branford notched a 12-0 home victory versus East Hampton on May 3. Sophomore Kiley Mullins tossed a complete game with 9 strikeouts for the T-Birds. Senior Bella Hills went 2-for-3 with a home run and 3 RBI; while senior Gianna Depino had a single with a triple and 4 RBI in the victory. Sophomore Lindsey Onofrio was 3-for-3 with 2 runs scored, 2 doubles, and 3 RBI; sophomore Natalia Lucibello had 2 hits with 3 runs scored and an RBI; and freshman Adriana Hills hit an RBI triple for the T-Birds.

On May 5, North Branford played a road game versus the Huskies and won the contest by a 6-0 score. Mullins pitched another complete game for the Thunderbirds, striking out 5 batters. Onofrio had a triple with a run an 3 RBI, junior Lexi Falcioni hit a double and scored a run, sophomore Gabi Senerchia had a single with a run, 2 RBI, and a stolen base; and Adriana Hills drew 2 walks to go with a run scored for North Branford.

Baseball

The North Branford baseball team gained a split of two games last week and now has a record of 8-7 this season.

In their first game of the week, the Thunderbirds took an 11-8 home loss against Branford on May 2. Then on May 6, North Branford played a road game versus Cromwell and claimed a 7-6 win against the Panthers.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The North Branford girls’ lacrosse team won two of its three games last week and is now 8-4 on the season.

On May 2, the T-Birds took a 10-8 home loss versus Branford. Then on May 5, North Branford played a road game against Haddam-Killingworth and triumphed by a 13-11 final.

Senior Braeden LeBeau and sophomore Keana Criscuolo both had 4 goals 3 assists for the T-Birds in their win over H-K. Senior Marissa Raffone scored 2 goals, while senior Grace Marra had 1 goal and 3 assists. Senior Mia Oliverio and sophomore Sophia Toto both added a goal in the victory. Junior goalie Ava Candelora made 10 saves in net.

Two days later, the T-Birds were back on the road to face North Haven and claimed a 14-10 victory against the Nighthawks.

Girls’ Tennis

The North Branford girls’ tennis team competed against Valley Regional for its lone meet of the week on May 3. The T-Birds took a 7-0 loss to the Warriors at Valley Regional High School to move to 3-7 on the year.
